The Names of God
We worship one God, who has revealed Himself in three ways.
The Trinity is talked about often in Christian circles. The
Trinity represents the three distinct personages of God. God the
Father. Jesus Christ, His son, and the Holy Spirit. But God has
had a tremendous number of names.
When we think of names, we think of unique identifiers that
separate us from others. It tends to be confusing when there are
four or five Bobs, or Janets in the office. Many European names
were created by describing the individual. Two of the most
famous are Eric the Red, who was named for his red hair, and his
son, Leaf, Eric's son. Eric's son became Erickson. When
the name of God is mentioned in the Bible, it refers to an
attribute, or characteristic. Some of the names used to describe
God and Jesus are:
- Deliverer
- Defender
- Provider
- Most Holy
- Light
- Bread of Life
- Almighty
- Counselor
- Prince of Peace
- Father
- The list goes on and on
There is only one God, but He has revealed Himself in many
ways. How many ways has He revealed Himself to you?
So when Jesus says: "Anything you ask for in my
name..." He is saying anything you ask for in my
attributes, in my characteristics, or in my will. And you can
rest assured that if you ask for anything in the will,
characteristic, or attribute of Jesus, it will be granted! |
